This melon hails from Chico, California where with was grown by John Bidwell (1819-1900). Bidwell was a Civil War General and U.S. Senator who procured his stock seed from the USDA in 1869.
Melons were developed and domesticated in Africa and Asia. Europeans settling in the Americas are recorded growing honeydew and casaba melons in the 17th century.
